Definition of Shading
Shading is a technique used by all artists to create an illusion of depth in a flat or 2-dimensional medium. This where an artist puts the darker points of an artwork which correspond with a specific light source. It gives the art a bit of a 3-dimensional effect, making it realistic.
It is easy to apply when using a pencil, but it can be quite difficult to achieve when it comes to coloring using oil paint or watercolor.
