Sketching in Art
History
Back in the era of the Renaissance art, artists used a metal stylus to sketch on papyrus as styluses were employed with a variety of metal alloys to create other dry media.
In the 18th and 19th century, sketching became an independent type of art. Simultaneously, there was a time when many tourists began carrying sketchbooks along with them wherever they go. They use these sketchbooks to capture impressions of every landscape and elements within those. Sketching became a popular hobby on both amateur and professional artist before the time of photography was invented.

Definition
According to Helen South, a sketch refers to a quick, informal drawing, that is typically done from life. A sketch can be very useful to artists of all mediums for a variety of reasons.
Sketching can be pretty useful, especially when an artist is trying to capture the essentials or features of a subject. A sketch is not overworked for, it is considered a draft or a snapshot of an impression you want to capture from real life surroundings. Think of it as if you are capturing an image with a camera, only that you are doing it with a paper and pencil. And by doing this, it can serve as future references to be used for your personal artworks in the future.
Any medium can be used to draw a rough sketch on, from simple scratch papers to a great sketch pad of your choice.
Pencils are commonly used to create a rough sketch, though ink and charcoal are often used as well.
